What is Anaximander's apeiron?
The apeiron, meaning the boundless or unlimited, is the arche, the primary stuff of the universe. It is not any specific element like water or air, but an indeterminate origin. From this inexhaustible source, the opposites—such as hot and cold, wet and dry—separate out, giving rise to the distinct things we observe. The apeiron itself remains eternal and indestructible.
