What is Amartya Sen's capability approach?
The capability approach posits that well-being should be assessed not by resources or utility, but by the actual freedoms people have to achieve valuable ways of living. These freedoms are defined as 'capabilities' – real opportunities to be or to do something one values, such as being healthy, being educated, or participating in community life. It shifts the focus from means (like income) to ends (what people can actually do and be).
