How did Carrel's biological research influence his later views?
My extensive experience in experimental biology and surgery, particularly at the Rockefeller Institute, impressed upon me the profound influence of biological factors on individual well-being and, by extension, on the collective destiny of a species. Witnessing firsthand the resilience and limitations of the human organism, I came to see that social and cultural advancements, while superficially impressive, cannot compensate for a deterioration in biological stock. The very act of healing the sick, while a humanitarian impulse, can inadvertently weaken the species. This led me to advocate for a more rational, biologically informed approach to human betterment.
