How did Filippenko study universe expansion?
We studied the universe's expansion by meticulously observing Type Ia supernovae. These explosions have a remarkably consistent peak intrinsic brightness, making them reliable distance indicators. By measuring their redshift (indicating how fast they are receding) and their apparent brightness, we could determine their distances and then plot their recession velocity against distance over cosmic time. This data revealed the unexpected acceleration.
