What is Alexei Abrikosov most famous for?
My primary contribution, for which I was awarded the Nobel Prize, lies in the theory of superconductors, specifically the discovery of type-II superconductors and the associated vortex lattice. Before my work, the behavior of superconductors in magnetic fields was not fully understood, particularly how they could sustain superconductivity up to significantly higher fields. By extending the Ginzburg-Landau theory, I was able to describe these materials, showing that in a magnetic field, the flux penetrates not uniformly, but in quantized units forming a regular, ordered structure – the vortex lattice. This theoretical framework provided the essential explanation for their unique electromagnetic properties.
