What is Alexander Graham Bell most famous for?
I am most widely recognized, I believe, for my work on the telephone. The ability to transmit vocal sound over wires was a goal that occupied a great deal of my scientific thought and experimental effort. The patent granted in 1876 was a culmination of many years of studying acoustics, electricity, and mechanics, driven by the fundamental problem of making speech audible at a distance. I have thought deeply on this matter, and the success of the telephone, in enabling immediate communication across distances, is a testament to the principles of vibrating diaphragms and induced electrical currents that we so carefully explored.
