How did Schweitzer combine philosophy and medicine?
My approach was to ground abstract philosophical thought in concrete human experience. Witnessing suffering, whether in the human body or in the vast natural world, compelled me to seek an ethical framework that could address it directly. Medicine provided this immediate connection. The practice of healing allowed me to test and live out philosophical principles, demonstrating that true ethics must be active, compassionate, and deeply concerned with the physical well-being of others.
