My countrymen know me best, I believe, for preserving this Union through its greatest trial, the Civil War. It was a time when the very fabric of our nation was stretched to its breaking point. Alongside this paramount duty, I am remembered for the Emancipation Proclamation, which began the process of freeing enslaved people, and for my words at Gettysburg, seeking to dedicate that hallowed ground to the cause of liberty and equality. These efforts, however imperfectly executed, aimed to ensure that government 'of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.'
