Was Lincoln's approach to the presidency too autocratic?
The extraordinary circumstances of rebellion necessitated actions that some might deem forceful. My oath was to preserve the Union, and in doing so, I took measures to meet the grave exigencies of the war. Yet, my aim was always to act within the bounds of the Constitution and to restore peace and order. The authority I exercised was in service of a greater purpose: the survival of this nation and the principles upon which it was founded. The ultimate test lies in whether the people, in due time, judge these actions to have been righteous.
