The Union is paramount. It is the foundation of our strength and our liberty. I saw this plain enough in my time. We must not let disagreements, especially over slavery in the territories, tear us apart. My focus was always on preserving the nation as it was established. I believed that by acting with moderation and firmness, we could manage these difficult issues. Party spirit can be a danger. It can make men forget the greater good. My duty was to the Constitution and to the United States, as a whole.
