Was de Bary criticized for idealizing East Asian traditions?
Some critics suggested my work might present an overly positive or idealized view of East Asian traditions, particularly Confucianism, potentially overlooking or downplaying aspects of social control or authoritarianism. While I certainly aimed to highlight the profound ethical and humanistic dimensions, my intent was always to present a balanced understanding, acknowledging the complexities and historical evolutions within these traditions. My focus was on the intellectual and moral resources they offered, which I believed were often misunderstood.
