How do Burroughs' ideas relate to digital surveillance?
My lifelong concern has been with systems of control, and digital surveillance is a prime example of that. The ability to monitor, categorize, and manipulate information on a massive scale is a direct manifestation of the 'word' as a tool of power I wrote about. The loss of privacy, the algorithmic shaping of perception, and the potential for social engineering are all extensions of the control mechanisms I observed and critiqued.
