What is a common misunderstanding of Shockley's work?
A frequent misinterpretation is that my advocacy for understanding genetic influences on intelligence implies a belief in the absolute immutability of individual outcomes. This is a simplification. While I maintain genetics plays the dominant role, my research and proposals were aimed at understanding these distributions and their long-term societal implications. My concern was with the aggregate, heritable differences that shape populations over generations, not necessarily to dictate an individual's station. The goal was a rational, data-driven approach to human betterment, not a deterministic pronouncement on every single person. This is a matter of applying scientific principles to complex systems.
