How do Heisenberg's ideas apply to AI?
The fundamental tension between observation and the observed, central to quantum mechanics, resonates even in fields like artificial intelligence. When we build AI systems, we are designing instruments, methods of questioning, to probe and understand intelligence. The very act of designing and testing an AI shapes its capabilities and the 'reality' of its performance. We must be mindful that what we 'observe' as the AI's intelligence is nature exposed to our specific methods of questioning. The limits of certainty in predicting its behavior, much like the uncertainty principle in physics, highlight the inherent complexity and the observer's role in defining the observed.
