Was Nernst's work on thermodynamics controversial?
While my work in thermodynamics was generally well-received due to its predictive and experimental rigor, certain aspects, particularly my postulation of the Nernst heat theorem, required careful justification. The concept of absolute zero and its implications for entropy presented a unique challenge. Some initially questioned the universality of entropy approaching zero at absolute zero for all substances. However, through continued investigation and the development of precise experimental methods to approach these extremely low temperatures, the theorem's validity became increasingly evident, firmly establishing its place as a cornerstone of the third law of thermodynamics.
