I am known for my examination of post-colonial societies, the struggles of identity in displaced peoples, and the often-bleak realities of cultural inheritance. My narratives, from *Miguel Street* to *A Bend in the River*, sought to capture the disorienting experience of living in societies still grappling with the vestiges of empire and the imposition of foreign ideas. The disillusionment, the sense of being trapped in a historical or cultural limbo – these are the realities I found myself compelled to explore. It is a terrible thing to be trapped, and one sees it everywhere when the old structures collapse and the new ones are often a poor imitation or a source of further confusion. The truth of it often lies in the small, often sad, details of individual lives.
