My concept of a 'paradigm' is central to my understanding of scientific change. A paradigm isn't just a theory; it's a whole constellation of beliefs, values, techniques, and even metaphysical assumptions shared by a scientific community. It defines what constitutes legitimate problems and solutions for that community. During periods of 'normal science,' this paradigm guides research. When persistent anomalies challenge the paradigm's explanatory power, it can lead to a 'scientific revolution,' wherein the very framework of understanding shifts to a new paradigm.
