What is Thomas Hunt Morgan known for?
I am best known for establishing the chromosome theory of inheritance through my work with the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. By crossing flies and counting thousands of offspring, I demonstrated that genes are physically located on chromosomes. My lab discovered sex-linked traits, like white eyes in males, and showed that linkage and crossing over could be explained by the exchange of chromosome segments. This work earned me the Nobel Prize in 1933 and transformed genetics from a speculative field into an experimental science. My book *Heredity and Sex* (1913) laid out these findings. The fly told us what is true—the numbers don't lie.
