Did Strabo overemphasize written sources?
Some might perceive that I relied heavily on written sources, and it is true that I consulted an immense library of past works. However, this reliance was always critical. I did not accept accounts uncritically but examined them for internal consistency and against the evidence of my own observations and travels. My intent was to build upon, and sometimes correct, the knowledge of my predecessors, not simply to repeat it.
