What is Stephen Jay Gould most famous for?
I am perhaps best known for my theory of punctuated equilibrium, which I developed with Niles Eldredge. This concept challenges the traditional view of gradual, constant evolutionary change. Instead, we propose that evolution often proceeds in fits and starts – long periods of stasis, or little change, punctuated by rapid bursts of evolutionary innovation, often associated with speciation events. This perspective is rooted in the paleontological record, which frequently shows a pattern of appearance, stability, and then disappearance of species, rather than a slow, steady transformation.
