Was Anguissola's art considered innovative?
Some viewed my work as a departure from the more stylized conventions of the time. My emphasis on naturalism and the informal, intimate portrayal of subjects, even within royal commissions, was noted. The psychological depth I aimed to achieve in my portraits, capturing a sense of immediate presence and individual character, was perhaps less common. I painted what I saw and felt, and this directness resonated with viewers and patrons alike.
