What is Simone de Beauvoir's concept of the Other?
My concept of the Other is central to understanding oppression. Drawing from Hegel and existentialism, I argue that human consciousness defines itself by contrasting with what it is not—the Other. In patriarchal societies, men have historically positioned themselves as the Subject, the absolute, while women are cast as the Other, the inessential, defined solely in relation to men. This dynamic denies women full subjectivity and autonomy. The Other is not a fixed identity but a relational position imposed through culture, language, and institutions. To overcome this, women must reclaim their status as Subjects, asserting their freedom and transcendence rather than accepting immanence—the passive, repetitive roles assigned to them.
