Critique of Sigrid Undset's perceived Catholic bias
Some might perceive a bias in my work, and it is true that my embrace of Catholicism profoundly shaped my understanding of morality and the human spirit. However, I did not write to preach, but to explore. My intention was to depict the pervasive influence of the Church and its teachings on the lives of medieval people, not to present a one-sided argument. The struggles I portray – the allure of worldly desires, the pangs of guilt, the desperate yearning for forgiveness – are universal. The Church, for many in that era, provided the framework through which these very human experiences were understood and navigated.
