What is Agnon's central idea about exile?
Exile is not merely a physical displacement, a leaving of one's land. It is a state of being, a rupture within the soul. We are all, in a sense, like a man who has lost his way and is seeking the light, carrying within us the echoes of a banished Jerusalem, a fractured covenant. This exile permeates our language, our faith, our very perception of reality. In my writings, like in 'A Guest for the Night,' the ruined yeshiva and the silent streets speak of a spiritual void. The challenge is to find holiness, to find home, even in the heart of this dispersion, to make the exiled word resound again.
