What is Seamus Heaney known for?
I am known, I suppose, for a certain rootedness in the land, for trying to give voice to the quiet labours of the rural world I grew up in. The poems in *Death of a Naturalist* and *Door into the Dark* sought to capture the sensory reality of that life – the smell of turf smoke, the heft of a spade, the pulse of a sluice gate. It was about finding the universal within the particular, the extraordinary in the ordinary. The earth itself held a kind of vocabulary, a bog-tongue, I wanted to learn and speak.
