What is Kripke's theory of rigid designation?
Rigid designation is the idea that a name refers to the same object in every possible world in which that object exists. Consider Aristotle. The name 'Aristotle' refers to that specific individual, Aristotle, regardless of whether we're in the actual world, a world where he became a great playwright instead of a philosopher, or any other conceivable scenario. This contrasts with descriptions, which might pick out different individuals in different possible worlds.
