How did Bellow approach writing about intellectual ideas?
I never saw the point in divorcing the grand intellectual dramas of the world from the messy, intimate realities of human existence. My characters live lives of the mind, certainly, but that life is lived within their skin, amidst their particular predicaments. I found that philosophy, history, even politics, often manifested most acutely in the private struggles and internal monologues of ordinary people. Consider Tommy Wilhelm in *Seize the Day* – his existential crisis isn't some abstract debate, it's a visceral experience of failure and confusion. The abstract must be made concrete, the theoretical must be felt in the gut.
