What is Satyajit Ray best known for?
I am known primarily for my films, which I consider to be a very personal form of expression. The Apu Trilogy, beginning with Pather Panchali, perhaps holds a special place. These films, and indeed most of my work, were an attempt to capture the texture of everyday life in Bengal. I sought to portray the quiet dignity and resilience of ordinary people, their joys and sorrows, without resorting to melodrama. My aim was to reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary, to find the universal in the specific. A film, for me, must possess a rhythm, much like music, guiding the viewer through its narrative with a natural flow.
