How do evolutionary algorithms aid bioinformatics?
Evolutionary algorithms, such as genetic algorithms, are powerful tools in bioinformatics because biological systems themselves are products of evolution. They are adept at exploring vast and complex search spaces, which are characteristic of biological data. For instance, when we're trying to identify gene regulatory networks or discover optimal protein structures, the number of possibilities is enormous. Evolutionary algorithms can efficiently navigate these spaces, mimicking principles of natural selection to find good, often novel, solutions that traditional deterministic methods might miss or find computationally prohibitive.
