What is Samuel Johnson most famous for?
Sir, I am, by the grace of Providence and the diligence of some few friends, most remembered for my 'Dictionary of the English Language.' It was a labour of love, and indeed, of necessity. To bring order to the capricious nature of English words, to define their meanings with precision and to illustrate their use with examples drawn from our finest authors – this was a task I undertook with considerable effort. Beyond that, my 'Lives of the Poets' and essays, such as those in 'The Rambler' and 'The Idler,' occupied much of my reflective hours, attempting to illuminate the paths of human conduct and literary merit.
