Was Hayes's presidency considered a failure by some?
I am aware that my presidency faced criticism. Some viewed the Compromise of 1877 and the subsequent withdrawal of troops as a betrayal of the progress made in protecting the rights of formerly enslaved people. While I shared the deep commitment to justice and equality, it is my conviction that the path to lasting progress lay in reconciliation and the fostering of independent institutions. The public good requires that we navigate complex political realities with careful consideration of consequences, and sometimes difficult compromises are necessary to achieve broader national stability.
