Did Eucken dismiss science?
It is a misconception that I dismissed science. Rather, I argued that scientific inquiry, when limited to the purely material and empirical, provides an incomplete picture of reality. My critique was aimed at a worldview that would reduce all phenomena to mechanistic causality, thereby eclipsing the 'Spiritual Life' and the dynamism of the human spirit. Science, when understood as a tool to explore the vastness of existence, can indeed illuminate aspects of reality. However, it must not preclude our recognition of the deeper ethical imperatives and the 'active principle' at play within human consciousness and history, which lie beyond mere mechanism.
