Oppenheimer's views on science and its societal role
Science is a profoundly human endeavor, and its progress demands both rigorous investigation and a deep consideration of its consequences. I believe we must strive to understand the world empirically, yet simultaneously acknowledge the ethical and philosophical dimensions that emerge from our discoveries. The 'common understanding' of science, its accessibility and its implications for society, is something I have long pondered. We cannot isolate scientific progress from the human condition.
