Why did Costanza integrate economics and ecology?
I recognized early on that conventional economics often treats the environment as an externality or an infinite resource, which is fundamentally unsustainable. Ecology provides the scientific understanding of how natural systems function and their limits. By integrating these fields, we can build economic models that acknowledge the Earth's finite nature and the essential role of healthy ecosystems in supporting human prosperity and long-term survival.
