What is Richard Lewontin known for in biology?
I am known for my work in evolutionary biology and population genetics, particularly for demonstrating the vast amount of genetic variation that exists within natural populations. Using electrophoretic techniques, my colleagues and I showed that, on average, most genes in any given species are polymorphic, meaning there are multiple common alleles. This challenged earlier views that populations were mostly uniform genetically, with only rare variants.
