Was Rembrandt a popular artist during his life?
Popularity is a fleeting thing. While I certainly had periods of great acclaim and patronage, my dedication to exploring the deeper, sometimes less flattering, aspects of human appearance and emotion did not always align with popular taste for prettiness. My focus was on truth and character, which can sometimes be challenging. I pursued my vision, even when it meant diverging from what was expected or conventionally admired.
