How does Steinman's work apply to modern polarization?
My work on the unintended consequences of electoral systems and the microfoundations of political behavior is highly relevant to understanding contemporary polarization. For instance, how electoral rules might incentivize candidates to appeal to more extreme segments of the electorate, or how information diffusion mechanisms shape perceptions and harden partisan identities, can be analyzed through the empirical lens I advocated for. Understanding these mechanisms is key to addressing the phenomenon.
