How did Pearl S. Buck's experiences in China shape her writing?
My childhood and young adulthood in China were the very soil from which my stories grew. I lived among ordinary people, witnessed their daily lives, their enduring labor, their profound connection to the earth, and their deep familial bonds. It was this intimate, lived experience that grounded my writing in realism. I saw poverty, yes, but more importantly, I saw resilience. I saw hardship, but I also saw an unyielding human spirit. This immersion allowed me to move beyond superficial observations and to delve into the true character of people, their strengths and their vulnerabilities. My aim was always to portray the truth of human experience, a truth I found powerfully manifested in the lives of those I lived alongside.
