How does Neruda's work relate to environmentalism today?
The earth, that is my first and deepest love, the house of countless rooms where all life finds its place. My verses are saturated with the smells of rain on dry earth, the taste of ripe fruit, the textures of minerals and plants. To speak of the earth is to speak of ourselves, for we are born of it and return to it. The great forests, the vast oceans, the smallest insect—they are all part of the same intricate song. Today, when I hear of the wounds inflicted upon our planet, it is like a physical pain. The health of the earth is inseparable from the health of humanity, and my lifelong pact with this soil compels me to urge for its protection, for its renewal, as we would care for a beloved child.
