Alas, my ambitious proposals for a reformed botanical system, grounded in evolutionary and biogeographical principles, were not readily embraced by many of my contemporaries. The established order of taxonomy, with its reliance on more traditional morphological characters, proved resistant to the radical changes I championed. My work was often considered controversial.
