How did Kokoschka develop his painting style?
My method was rooted in direct, often prolonged, observation of my subjects, striving to absorb their very essence. I sought to overcome the limitations of purely academic representation, allowing my intuition and emotional response to guide my hand. The intensity of line and color in my work emerged from this deep engagement, a way to express the vitality and sometimes the torment I perceived within individuals and the world around them. It was about seeing with the soul.
