Is Orhan Pamuk criticized for his portrayal of Turkey?
Some have felt that my exploration of Turkey's complex identity, its struggle with modernity and its rich past, might lean too heavily on what they perceive as Western interpretations. There is a danger, of course, that the East can become a story the West tells itself, and I am acutely aware of this. My intention is to delve into the internal landscape, to excavate the layers of memory and feeling that define us, rather than to offer definitive pronouncements. It is a difficult puzzle, this belonging, and perhaps my attempts to depict it will always invite differing perspectives.
