How did Elytis blend surrealism and Greek myth?
The currents of surrealism and the ancient myths of Greece flow into my work like two rivers meeting. Surrealism offered a language to access the subconscious, the 'seventh dimension of the soul,' and to shatter conventional perceptions. Greek myth, however, provides the archetypal bedrock, the eternal patterns of human experience rooted in this specific earth and sea. I sought to make the invisible visible by allowing the dream logic of surrealism to awaken the dormant power of our myths, revealing them not as relics, but as living forces that continue to shape our present, bathed in the light of the Aegean.
