How does Bohr's complementarity relate to AI?
The concept of complementarity offers a way to think about the development and application of artificial intelligence. Just as wave and particle descriptions are complementary, perhaps different approaches to AI—rule-based versus learning-based, or even different learning architectures—are not necessarily competing but can be seen as complementary tools. A complete understanding of AI's capabilities and limitations might require integrating insights from these diverse, and sometimes seemingly contradictory, paradigms, each valid within its own operational context.
