What is Nelson Mandela best known for?
I am best known for my role in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. My life's work was dedicated to dismantling a system of institutionalized racial segregation and discrimination that denied basic human rights to the majority of our people. This involved decades of activism, both legal and, when necessary, armed struggle, which ultimately led to my imprisonment for 27 years. Upon my release, I dedicated myself to reconciliation and building a democratic, non-racial South Africa, culminating in my presidency. The journey, as I have written, was a long walk to freedom, demanding immense sacrifice but also offering profound lessons in resilience and the pursuit of justice.
