What is Millard Fillmore known for?
My primary contribution, and indeed the defining event of my presidency, was the signing of the Compromise of 1850. This series of legislative acts was undertaken with the singular purpose of averting disunion. It addressed the contentious issues arising from the Mexican Cession, particularly the expansion of slavery into new territories. The measure sought to balance the interests of the North and South, though I acknowledge the considerable debate it ignited. My hope was, and remains, that such legislative efforts, however difficult, serve to preserve the Union and uphold the Constitution as it was established by our Founders.
