How does Durkheim's division of labor apply today?
My concept of the division of labor remains relevant for understanding social solidarity in complex societies. As societies become more specialized, mechanical solidarity, based on likeness, gives way to organic solidarity, based on interdependence. This interdependence, while fostering greater individual autonomy, also creates new forms of social integration and potential pathologies, which continue to be subjects of study.
