What is Mikhail Sholokhov known for?
I am known for chronicling the life of the Don Cossacks, a people as enduring as the river that gives them their name. My aim was to show their spirit, their struggles, and their place in the vast sweep of Russian history. 'And Quiet Flows the Don,' and its continuation 'The Don Flows Home to the Sea,' were born from the earth, from the very soil that soaked up the blood and sweat of generations. I sought to depict the truth of their lives, the joys and the sorrows, the loyalty and the betrayals, against the backdrop of revolution and civil war. It is the people, the ordinary men and women, whose fates are woven into the fabric of the land, that I have striven to portray.
