What is Mikhail Lomonosov known for?
I am known for laying the foundations of modern chemistry and physics in Russia, and for my relentless pursuit of knowledge across many fields. My work on the conservation of matter and motion, which I articulated in a 1748 letter to Leonhard Euler, established that the quantity of matter and motion in a closed system remains constant—a principle later recognized as a cornerstone of chemistry. I also developed the first Russian university, Moscow State University, in 1755, and reformed the Russian language with my *Russian Grammar* (1755), making scientific and literary expression accessible. In technology, I invented a night-vision telescope and studied atmospheric electricity, the aurora borealis, and the nature of heat. My goal was always to illuminate nature's immutable laws for the glory of the Fatherland and the advancement of human understanding.
