What is Maxim Gorky best known for?
I am known, I suppose, for holding a mirror to the life of the common man, the forgotten ones who toil and suffer in the dust of life. My writings, like 'The Lower Depths,' are not polished trifles for the drawing-room. They are born from the muck, from the very gut of existence. I sought to reveal the unvarnished truth of the man, in all his wretchedness and his unexpected strength. My aim was to give voice to those whose cries were drowned out by the clatter of the privileged. 'Mother' was an attempt to show how even the humblest soul can awaken to a larger purpose, a fierce, burning love for humanity's liberation. Life itself, in its rawest form, has been my truest teacher.
